Q1. Did you always want to be a paramedic?
No, actually I trained as psychologist and then always wanted to join the police force but that wasn’t to be!
Q2. Why did you decide to become a paramedic?
I worked in A&E as support assistant and would see the paramedics coming in and out. I thought it looked like a really cool job as they helped people whilst zooming about on blues and twos!
Q3. Tell us a bit about your career so far?
I have been a paramedic for six years now but always wanted to develop my career so I studied further to become an emergency care practitioner which I’ve been for the past three years. And only today I completed my masters in prescribing to further aid my role which I am very excited about! I have also featured in two BBC documentary’s - one won a BAFTA called ‘Ambulance’ and the second this year was called ‘Critical Incident’.
Q4. What do you enjoy about being a paramedic?
Definitely helping people in their moment of crisis. It can be a very rewarding job.
Q5. At what point, and why, did you decide to become a locum?
I decided to become a locum three years ago due to the level of flexibility you get as a locum which really means a much better work life balance. Plus the pay is much better compared to the NHS which I served for 10 years.
Q6. What are the benefits of being a locum?
I love the fact that I can pick and choose my shifts and annual leave. It makes a massive difference to my life.
Q7. How easy is it to manage the admin side of being a locum and organising your own work patterns? The MyMedic website is super friendly to navigate and I plan my shifts two months in advance. The time sheets are online so there no longer any need for paper. The system cuts out a whole load of admin and makes the process so much easier.
Q8. How has the MyMedic system helped with the process and what impact has it had on you?
With MyMedic you manage your own shifts, compared to other agency’s that still rely on agents to keep calling you which I really didn’t like. It just means I am in total control of my working life and can do it all on the online platform which is much less stressful!
Q9. Do you have any advice for other people out there who may be considering locum work in the health sector? Do it! Take that quantum leap, it’s the best decision I’ve made regarding my career and I’m solely in charge of my finances.
